Songs For Your Day

I suppose it started just before I left, when one night in the lounge, my COS documents done and sent off, I looked up the Muppets on Youtube.  Life’s been a laugh riot ever since.

I love the Muppets, in all their incarnations–Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock–but most especially I love The Muppet Show.  Inspired by my insistence that the family gather around the computer to watch Muppet videos online (Bohemian Rhapsody, Ode to Joy, that one with the chickens) my little brother, in a legendary gift-giving divination, bought me season one of The Muppet Show for Christmas.  I am obsessed.

Why do I like them?  Aside from the obvious humor, the music, the sheer originality, there is Henson’s philosophy, so wonderfully expressed by Kermit during the high noon showdown against Doc Hopper in The Muppet Movie: “I’ve got a dream, too, but it’s about singing and dancing and making people happy.  That’s the kind of dream that gets better the more people you share it with.”

Musical highlights include Rowlf singing the ever popular classic, “You and I and George” (only two people bought copies of that record; I bought one.  George bought one.  Where were you?), and his nearly error-free rendition of Fur Elise.  And of course, who can forget the innovative vocal stylings of Animal, the Swedish Chef, and Beaker?

I know they’re not an exclusively musical entertainment, and might not be the most fitting thing for this website, but the music from the shows and movies have been the songs of my days since I came home.

Totally fitting for this website. Those gave Britt and me a good laugh. We need to hang out soon.
